Cleaning stained glass can be a detailed process.
Stained glass has been around for centuries. Some of it remains in the same place where it was originally installed. Think of the great cathedrals of Europe. Some of it has been passed on from generation to generation, moved from place to place, uninstalled and reinstalled.
As you can imagine, after a great amount of time stained glass pieces can
become extremely dirty. Particularly if the panel is exposed to the outside of a home, without the protection of another plain pane of glass. Stained glass cleaning becomes a necessity over time.
This grime will seriously detract from the luster and beauty of the stained glass piece. Grime can creep in under the lead strips, it can crust in the corners . . . well, we probably don’t have to tell you about grime. If you have a stained glass panel installed in your home that has gotten dirty, or if you’ve just purchases an antique piece that’s definitely dirty, it’s time for stained glass cleaning.
How is it done? After all, stained glass is a piece of art. You would not want to clean a work of art with any old household cleaner, would you? What you’d use depends on just how dirty your piece is. If mere dusting is not enough (and we do recommend regular dusting) make sure the cleaner you use is ammonia-free, vinegar-free, non-abrasive, and pH-neutral. You’ll also need a soft, non-scratching cloth.
By the way, the lead caming strips in your stained glass piece are meant to be a dark color, so there is no reason to try to polish them up.
